Somerset Man Seriously Wounded in Rear-End Collision

A man was seriously injured after crashing into the rear of a box truck in West Windsor Sunday. West Windsor Police say the crash occurred in the early morning hours on Route 1 near the Meadow Road overpass. The injured man was driving southbound in a Toyota sedan when he crashed into the truck. The force of impact caused the truck to tip over and land on its side, police said.

The Toyota driver, a 25-year-old Somerset man, was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening head injuries. He was listed in stable condition Sunday afternoon. The box truck driver, a 43-year-old Pennsauken man, suffered only minor injuries and remained at the scene.

All lanes of Route 1 were shut down for approximately four hours while police investigated and cleared the scene.

Rear-end collisions are the most common types of vehicle accidents in New Jersey. They are typically caused by distracted driving, following too closely, or poor weather conditions. Rear-end collisions are also the most common nationally, accounting for 1.7 million of the total number of car accidents each year. In New Jersey, drivers are required to maintain a safe following distance, and blame for rear-end collisions typically falls on the rear driver.
