On Monday, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle while walking on Interstate 280 in Newark. According to the New Jersey State Police, the crash occurred around 1 a.m. near milepost 12.9, when a westbound vehicle struck a pedestrian walking in the travel lanes. In New Jersey, pedestrians are prohibited from walking along travel lanes of limited-access highways such as I-280, except in emergency situations. Vehicles on these roadways travel at high speeds, leaving drivers little time to react to unexpected hazards or pedestrians along the roadway. Injuries from pedestrian crashes on highways are often serious or life-threatening due to the force of impact.
