Our Family Has Given A Voice To The Injured For Over 50 Combined Years

A 6-year-old on a bicycle was struck and killed by a vehicle Friday afternoon in a residential Jersey City neighborhood. The crash occurred just before 4 p.m. near the intersection of Jersey Avenue and Sixth Street. According to the Jersey City Police Department, the child suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials later confirmed he was a local resident who lived nearby.
Police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. As of now, no charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing. Neighbors described the area as a quiet, close-knit community where children are often riding bikes and playing along the residential streets near Hamilton Park. The community held a candlelight vigil for the boy and his family Sunday night.
Government officials and neighborhood residents expressed both condolences to the family and frustrations over lack of law enforcement and road rules. Residents say that drivers have become a threat to the neighborhood with speeding, rolling through stop signs, and that an excess of vehicles regularly block crosswalks on the narrow downtown streets.
“In the past 24 hours my team and I have examined our Vision Zero laws and policies to ensure this never happens again,” Councilman James Solomon said in a message on Sunday. “You have my full commitment to do more, and to do it faster. [This] is our plan based on the Vision Zero review, divided into what we can do immediately and what we can do over the next year.” Details can be found here.
On Monday, a petition for speedbumps garnered hundreds of signatures and continues to grow daily. Petitioners are requesting:
- Speed bumps along Newark Avenue between Dickinson High School and The Little Gym
- A comprehensive traffic safety review
- A transparent city-community discussion regarding long-term pedestrian safety improvements
A rally is also scheduled for Monday, June 23 at 5 p.m. in front of City Hall to demand safer streets.
Officials are asking anyone with information regarding the fatal collision to contact the Jersey City Police Department tip line at po********@****ps.org or call 855-JCP-TIPS (8477).
