A tractor-trailer carrying nearly a dozen different chemicals exploded on Route 3 in Clifton, New Jersey, this past Monday after crashing into a concrete sound barrier, instantly killing the driver. The explosion prompted emergency officials to close the highway in both directions and evacuate nearby homes. The blast decimated the concrete barrier and melted the siding of several homes in proximity.
The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office reports the truck driver appeared to have swerved after clipping a New Jersey Transit bus carrying 29 passengers, crashing into the wall. The truck erupted into flames upon impact, setting off a massive explosion and burning the cab beyond recognition. The driver’s body was discovered after Clifton Fire Department crews extinguished the fire. No bus passengers were injured.
Route 3 Westbound lanes reopened late Monday afternoon, and eastbound lanes reopened Tuesday morning after the road was milled and repaved. Officials cleared evacuated residents to return home by mid-afternoon after inspections determined the homes to be safe.
